Marketing Myth Buster Checklist
5 marketing myths that are quietly costing small businesses. Check yourself.
Myth #1
“I need to be on every social platform”
I’ve been guilty of this one
✅ THE TRUTH
You need to be consistently good on ONE platform where your customers actually are. A ghost presence on six platforms is worse than a strong presence on one.
⚠ REAL-WORLD IMPACT
Spreading yourself across six platforms means mediocre content everywhere, burnout, and zero traction anywhere.
💡 DO THIS INSTEAD
Audit where your last 10 customers actually found you. Go deep on that one platform for 90 days.
Myth #2
“More followers = more business”
I’ve been guilty of this one
✅ THE TRUTH
An engaged audience of 500 ideal customers beats 50,000 random followers every time. Follower count is a vanity metric.
⚠ REAL-WORLD IMPACT
Chasing followers leads to broad, generic content that attracts everyone and converts no one.
💡 DO THIS INSTEAD
Look at your last 10 customers. What do they have in common? Create content specifically for that person.
Myth #3
“I need a big budget to compete with big brands”
I’ve been guilty of this one
✅ THE TRUTH
Big brands can’t be personal, local, fast, or authentic the way you can. Those are free advantages.
⚠ REAL-WORLD IMPACT
Trying to out-spend big brands is a game you’ll always lose. Out-humaning them is a game you can always win.
💡 DO THIS INSTEAD
Identify one thing you can do that a big brand literally cannot (text customers personally, remember their names, show up in 20 minutes). Do that thing loudly.
Myth #4
“If I post good content, people will find me”
I’ve been guilty of this one
✅ THE TRUTH
Great content without distribution is just a really good diary. You have to actively put it in front of people.
⚠ REAL-WORLD IMPACT
Posting and praying is not a strategy. The best content in the world needs a push to get traction.
💡 DO THIS INSTEAD
For every piece of content you create, spend equal time distributing it — share in groups, email your list, text it to 3 people.
Myth #5
“My customers don’t care about my story”
I’ve been guilty of this one
✅ THE TRUTH
Your story is the only thing big brands can’t copy. Customers absolutely care — they just don’t want a polished PR version of it.
⚠ REAL-WORLD IMPACT
Generic “about us” pages that list credentials convert terribly. Real stories build real trust.
💡 DO THIS INSTEAD
Replace one credential on your About page with a real moment from your business history. See what happens.
